@brenda: The thing is, the papers would not have known about the student's wishes. I just thought it should have been more of a automatic issue about being decent, and making a good judgment call about whether or not there was the need to name anyone.

"The student has asked not to be named."

I guess The New Paper does not understand what it means to 'not be named' then. Irresponsible reporting, anyone?

I'm disappointed. I never had a good view of our local mainstream media in the first place, as they are supposedly known to misquote or only report one side of the story. However, considering how this a case that has hit home (SMU - fellow student), the local media has sunk to a new low.

Hi Prof, Thanks much for the comment! It probably helped that I was somewhat personally involved, and hence have quite a different perspective... Looking from the inside writing out? Maybe also some evidence that I was listening (and not Facebooking?) in your Comm201 Managing External Relations class. ;)

@daphne: I wouldn't speak to anyone unless I know them in future for this kind of topic. end of story. haha.
@dk: Hard to determine that actually, diseases are dynamic in nature. US climate is rather different from ours and no one really knows what it might mutate into? Oh well, different culture (and also because the memory of SARS did not really affect the general US population).

Overhyped. Even in US where there is a lot of confirmed case and death, life still goes on. It is not as dangerous as SARS.

the tactic is this.. have a long long long long phone interview with the interviewee until s/he can no longer remember what was said during the interview.

then just write anything u want, that fits the angle of your story, and hope s/he really doesn't remember.

to cut a long story short: don't speak to the press when u think u might be disadvantaged (esp over such a sensationalized piece of news where there's just a lot of areas that they can misquote you and make you look stupid). bleh.

@DK: Cannn.. but I will have to kill you after that. haha!! *j/k* Yes, everyone is fine, thanks for the concern! It is ironic, but at this point, the pressure from the media has probably shaken everyone up/affected them more than the actual flu itself! Seriously.
