Applications, Platforms and Profits
“Everyone will be Profitable …Except Facebook.”
- It’s the developers of applications on popular platforms that stand to profit.
“Advertising on social nets will never be commensurate with the amount of time people spend on them. And Facebook has made several failed attempts at innovative marketing efforts that members loudly rejected.”
- An emphasis on the merits of social and mobile combined
I suppose in that sense, the entire ecosystem that Apple has designed around its Iphone which allows developers to submit their applications for download (subject to approval from Apple) is pretty much genius, as most of their stuff. To quote snippets of an interesting conversation I had with a 16 year old, who basically said it was crazy to get an Iphone, why would anyone pay 3 times more for a core feature (aka a phone).
Don’t be mislead by the word phone in the name. The Iphone is not exactly a phone, it’s a life organizer, entertainment device that just happens to be able to make calls. Maybe that’s why the fact that the SMS system and typing does take a while to get used to hasn’t deterred many from adopting the device.
Then again, the applications themselves are not quite what’s keeping Apple afloat. That’s why I like the use of the word ecosystem because that’s what it is, different elements working together and building business synergy.
As always, for Apple the formula is 1. build hardware, 2. turn it into a platform, 3. profit.
Still, I haven’t quite gotten over the fact that a 16 year old was using terms like ‘core feature’.
