Forget Singlish….here comes..Chinglish!
All eyes are on China right now, and not just because of the Olympics, but really, for the potential growth she offers. With a market a size that most large businesses can hardly ignore (it has been said that if each and every one of the estimated one billion or so Chinese each consumed like the Americans did, they would require the entire capacity of the planet.) How’s that for making you feel small!
Wired has come up with an article on the evolution of english.
On that note, language is truly generative. I am convinced that every single one of you who speaks the I can haz cheezeburger language must have first been fluent in english, in order to understand the structure and the rules that underlie this warped, but amusing version of it. I is happys to says that it is almost always apparents when someones is truly clueless. Somehow, you can just tell from the way someone is talking or writing, such as when consistent errors are made all the time.
Bad grammar/use of language irks a lot of people. I recall that there are Facebook groups out there with staunch believers of preserving the original glory of English.
I wonder about these general guidelines:
Typos in SMSes are acceptable.
Typos in personal blog rants are acceptable.
Typos in semi-professional blog articles are not so acceptable (but easily rectified.)
Typos immortalized in print materials are never acceptable!
